OUTPUT

STANDARD OUTPUT CATEGORIES

The hierarchical structure of the ASCED allows users the flexibility to output statistics at the level of the classification which best suits their requirements. Data can be presented by Broad Levels, Narrow Levels, or by the base Detailed (third) Levels. If necessary, significant Detailed Levels within a Narrow Level can be presented separately while the remaining Detailed Levels within the Narrow Level are aggregated. For example, the third-level category '111 Higher Doctorate' can be separately identified as an output category within the Narrow Level '11 Doctoral Degree Level', with the remaining third-level Detailed Level categories in this Narrow Level aggregated in an 'Other Doctoral Degree Level' category. As no Broad Level contains more than two Narrow Levels, such aggregation is unnecessary at the second level of the Classification.

Constraints affecting statistical collection, such as confidentiality or standard errors, may not permit the output of data at the more detailed levels of the classification. However, regardless of the level of aggregation envisaged for dissemination, where possible, data should be captured, classified and stored at the detailed level of the classification. The use of the standard classification will enhance data comparability even though it may not always be possible to disseminate the data at the most detailed level.

    Level of highest educational attainment

The following are the recommended standard output categories for data on 'Level of highest educational attainment':

      Postgraduate Degree
      Graduate Diploma/Graduate Certificate
      Bachelor Degree
      Advanced Diploma/Diploma
      Certificate III/IV
      Year 12
      Year 11
      Year 10
      Certificate I/II
      Year 9 or below
      Certificate not further defined
      Level not determined

Note: It is recommended that a footnote explaining that for the purposes of highest educational attainment, some Secondary education is considered higher than some Certificate levels. For example, if the output category 'Below Year 10' is used, then the following footnote should be attached: "Includes people who have completed a Certificate I/II as their highest non-school qualification but whose highest year of school completed is below Year 10. For further details see the Explanatory Notes."
The following are the recommended short names for the output categories above:
      Postgrad. Deg.
      Grad. Dip./Grad. Cert.
      Bach. Deg.
      Adv. Dip./Dip.
      Cert. III/IV
      Year 12
      Year 11
      Year 10
      Cert I/II
      Year 9 or below
      Cert. N.F.D.
      L.N.D.
    Aggregation of categories

Output for 'Level of highest educational attainment' at the Broad Level of the ASCED Level of Education classification indicates completion of a Detailed Level category associated with the Broad Level. For example, output at Broad Level 1 (Postgraduate Degree Level) indicates completion of a Doctorate or Master Degree. However, when using the standard ABS highest educational attainment variable, data cannot be output at Broad Level 5 (Certificate Level) or Broad Level 6 (Secondary Education) as some Detailed Level Secondary Education categories are regarded as higher than some Detailed Level Certificate level categories. Similarly data cannot be output at Narrow Level 62 (Junior Secondary Education).

    Field of highest educational attainment

The following are the recommended standard 'field' output categories for this variable:

      Natural and physical sciences
      Information technology
      Engineering and related technologies
      Architecture and building
      Agriculture, environmental and related studies
      Health
      Education
      Management and commerce
      Society and culture
      Creative arts
      Food, hospitality and personal services
      Mixed field programmes
      Field not determined
